The long term residential treatment although a 24-hour care may be in a non-hospital setting. Its focus is on resocialization and therapy in between 6-12 months stay. The short term residential treatment on the other hand involves a brief treatment from 3-6 week hospital stay. The third option may be varied depending on the patient needs but it is much cheaper. The individual and group counseling as its name suggests, makes use of counseling techniques whether in a group or in individual type. The last one is wherein a person who is in contact with criminal justice system may experience intervention and treatment in lieu with criminal justice sanctions.

The success of a treatment often depends on the way an approach fits the client. The more mismatch the treatment is, the less likely that a person with substance problem may answer to it.
